Choosing floor tiles can be a daunting task. Floor tiles are going to be a part of your house for many years. They are not something that is quickly and frequently changed. You have to choose floor tiles that match the color theme of your home. The color theme of the furniture and the colors on the walls may change over time hence floor tiles should be neutral enough to go well with those changes over time. When selecting tiles, you might be intimidated by the variety of colors, textures, and patterns available in the market. But, once you choose one element how do you decide which floor tile to buy for your house?

Location

Before you buy floor tiles, decide the spaces of your house for which you need them. Tile materials vary. Some materials are water-resistant, durable, easy to clean than others. Different materials would serve different purposes in various parts of the house. Choose a floor tile that is safe, non-slippery and easy to walk on. For the shower choose a textured tile whereas for indoors you can use ceramic tiles and for outdoors porcelain tiles work well as they are less porous than ceramic tiles and last longer against all kinds of weather. For the kitchen floor, you need tiles that can bear spills, stains, and use of cleaning chemicals. After you choose the texture of your tiles it time to move on color.

Color

Colors influence the look and feel of the room. They can uplift a person mood as they walk into the room, can make it appear dull or bright. Dark tiles may add warmness to your room but for dark tiles to look good make sure your room is spacious and has enough light so that the room does not appear dark and dim. In the living area or the kitchen, you can choose dark colored tiles which are chocolate brown, navy or brunt brown. Dark tiles do not reflect dirt, stains as much as light-colored tiles. They are suitable for areas in the house which the family uses the most. If you have a small space and want to make it look bigger, you should choose tiles with lighter hues like cream, white, or pastel shades. These work well for a small bathroom or narrow walkways in the house. There are so many options available; you can mix and match colors as well to create patterns on the floor, a mix of light and dark or a mix of different shades of the same color look good too.

Pattern

Nowadays tiles are available in various patterns. You can also select your pattern and get them custom made. Patterns can give either a subtle or a dramatic look to your house. So, it depends on the kind of look you want to create for your house. Stone pattern or a wood pattern will give a rustic look; marble pattern gives an austere look. Keep in mind to not clash patterns in one room. If either the floor or the wall has a strong pattern keep the other subtler so that the room does not look too busy. Make one pattern the hero or the stand out factor in the room.

Size

After choosing the design, location, color, and pattern, it is time to move on to the size of the tile. Large tiles add the look of space to small areas whereas small tiles can make a room look more intimate. Small tiles will have more lines and make not give a clean look to the floor as compared to large tiles. Small floor tiles require more time and effort to install as compared to large floor tiles.
